Become A Dreampower Volunteer!!
What Does A Dreampower Volunteer Do?
- Foster Dogs or Cats
- This means caring for homeless animals temporarily in your own home. This is the basis for Dreampower - as we have no "animal shelter". We occasionally need a retirement home for an animal. Food, supplies and vet care are provided by Dreampower. Dog runs, cat condos and pet kennels are often available for loan to volunteers.
- Foster Small, Caged Animals
- This could be rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, ferrets, etc. We try to help anything that comes our way. Appropriate space is necessary, depending on the animal. Cages are usually provided.
- Foster Large Animals
- This could be horses, donkeys, pot belly pigs, etc. We try to help anything that comes our way. Appropriate space and shelter is necessary, depending on the animal.
- Weekend Adoption Fairs
- This is the "hub" of activity for Dreampower. Fairs are held on most Saturdays, from 11am to 3pm at various pet supply store locations. We need help holding the dogs for adoption on leashes for meetings with potential adopters; assisting in the cat room (cats are in cages); setting up & cleaning up. We also need "greeters" to assist the potential adopters. Minimum commitment is one fair per month. Minimum age to volunteer without supervision is 16 years. Occasionally 14-15 year olds may volunteer without supervision after attending 3 fairs with a parent.
- Humane Education
- This work usually goes on during the day on weekdays. We offer presentations to school children on pet care and other important topics. Videotapes and other presentation materials are used. Usually, two volunteers travel to each classroom.
- Special Events
- We often participate in special events in which we have booths that are staffed by Dreampower volunteers (e.g. Springspree, Territory Days, St. Patricks Day Parade). This includes talking with people and general public relations. We also need help planning volunteer celebration events.
- Fundraising
- assisting and/or leading various events as needed, selling fundraising items or working on a committee to put on an event or fund-raiser.
- Adoption Follow-up
- This entails calling adopters to ensure all is well with an adoption; confirm that spay or neuter has been done when required and verify if necessary. This is a very important part of our program, but can be stressful. Good "people skills" are necessary - one must deal with somewhat difficult people at times.
- Animal Transport
- This need includes transportation of dogs, cats and sometimes horses to and from foster homes, to the vet or to adoption fairs.
- Newsletter
- Dreampower publishes a quarterly newsletter. The articles are generally written by volunteers. The newsletter is distributed to local veterinarians and other pet oriented businesses. Assistance with these deliveries is also needed.
- Donation Pick-Ups
- On an as-needed basis small, medium and large (truck needed) items need to be picked up and delivered, either to PetsMart or to a volunteers home.
- Telephoning
- Telephone work requires anywhere from a minimal to extensive time commitment, e.g. calls to volunteers as reminders of events, returning calls which come in to the Dreampower message center.
- Special Projects
- For example, artwork, lettering, poster making, photography, videography, data entry. If you have a talent in one of these areas, please specify this on your volunteer application.
